New York, here we come!

How many days NYC?

New York was a stopover for us in our backpacking trip through America and the Caribbean, but if you only go to New York with children for a city trip, that is certainly doable. How many days you need to be in New York is a question that only you can answer, but we were able to see a lot in 4 days.

Good place to stay with kids

What is first important to realize is that New York is incredibly big and that means that you have to think carefully about where you want to spend the night. Hotels in Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx are of course cheaper. That is why we initially thought of booking a hotel in Queens, because that saved more than €200 compared to a hotel in Manhattan. But a hotel in Queens also means a taxi back to your hotel every evening and with the taxi prices in New York the costs add up very quickly. Another alternative was traveling by metro late at night, but we certainly didn't like the latter with the youngest. So in the end we decided to book a hotel in the center. We ended up booking at the Edison Times Square hotel, which is, as you probably guessed, close to Times Square on 47th Street. In addition to being beautiful, that also sounds expensive, I understand that all too well, but the high price is still relative. When you deduct the taxi costs that you save from the price difference with Queens, you come out almost equal. All in all, also because many sights are located in Manhattan, I definitely recommend booking a hotel in Midtown Manhattan. We stayed in the Edison Times Square Hotel with 4 people for 4 days / 3 nights for a total amount of € 800,-. This included all taxes and such.

Transport from the airport to the city

We flew from Paris directly to New York with Air France (from the Netherlands, for example, you can fly to New York with KLM or Icelandair, sometimes you can find airline tickets for 349 euros return). In the morning we ate a delicious croissant under the foot of the Eiffel Tower and in the afternoon we flew to NYC. Due to the time difference, we arrived at the end of the afternoon, so we could have breakfast under the Eiffel Tower and dine in the big apple the same day. Once you arrive at JFK you will be at your hotel in no time. You can take a yellow cab or ask the hotel for an airport pick-up. We did the latter, because it made little difference in terms of price. The ride from JFK to Manhattan was an experience in itself. Although we live in Rotterdam and are therefore used to high "towers", driving into Manhattan for the first time is very special. Not only the children, but also we were amazed during the ride. The rest of the evening was mainly spent acclimatizing with the children. We left the hotel in the evening to see Times Square. Ideal as this was only a 70m walk. And if the children are not yet tired of the journey, they will be from all those impressions. All around you you see light commercials, crowds, a large amount of police cars and dozens of other elements that make Time Square Time Square.

Apply for your ESTA for America in time

Another important thing not to forget: Make sure you apply for an Esta before you go to New York. This is, as it were, the visa for America and you need it to enter the country. You can simply apply for this online.
